Coastal Carolina Council NJ 1989; Council Shoulder Patches (CSP’s) Identify the Council, the Scout and Troop are Members or (JSP) identifying the Council Jamboree Contingent
Every council has shoulder patches that individually identifies their council. Council shoulder patches came into existence in 1972. The councils can change their designs of the embroidered CSP’s.
Additionally Councils Produced:
- Hat Pins in the shape and design of the shoulder patch for Scouts and Scouters to trade.
- State Lettered Patches Identify the State that the Scout and their Troop is a Member
- Council Lettered Patches identified the Council membership; colors RWS,TRS,KRS,GBS,BBS, in 1/2 strips, Full Strips and State strips
- Community Lettered Patches identified the Community that the Troop and Scout was a member
- Council and District Round Patches Identify the Council or District that the Scout and their Troop is a Member
- Council Neckerchiefs and Slides identify the Council the Scout and Troop are Members, a Council Activity or a Council Contingent
- Jamboree Shoulder Patches, Neckerchiefs and Slides Identify the Council, the Scout and Troop are part of this Council Jamboree Contingent
- Regional Shoulder Patches identify the Region the Scout and Scouter are Members or identify a National Activity
- Patrol patches, Den numerals, den patches identifies the Patrol or Den that the Scout was a member within the Troop that uses the Patrol Method or Pack
- The American Flag identifies their country as the United States of America.
- Unit Numerals indicates their current Unit number
CSP Category Identifiers
Firstly, Council Shoulder Patches are identified by the materials used, as either Embroidered or Twill.
Secondly, the Twill can be directional as:
- No Twill (NT): The grain appears to neither go up to the left nor up to the right.
- Twill Left (TL): The grain of twill of the patch appears to go up diagonally to the left.
- Twill Left Rough (TLR): TL with a rough grain.
- Twill Left Smooth (TLS): TL with a smooth grain.
- Twill Right (TR): The grain of twill of the patch appears to go up diagonally to the right.
- Right Rough (TRR): TR with a rough grain.
- Twill Right Smooth (TRS): TR with a smooth grain.
- TVE: Twill varieties exist. Sometimes patches are identical except for a minor twill difference.
Embroidered Council Shoulder Patches have the Catalog Identifier starting with the letter “S”.
Council Shoulder Patches that are Twill have the Catalog Identifier starting with the letter “T”.
Lettered Shoulder Patches
Lettered Shoulder Patches existed prior to 1972 and as early as the 1930’s. Includes RW: Red & White strip, worn by Scouts in Troops. BBS: Blue & blue strip, worn by Air Scouts. BWS: Blue & white strip, worn by Sea Scouts. BYS: Blue & yellow strip, worn by Cub Scouts. GBS: Green & brown strip, worn by Explorers. KRS: Khaki & red strip, worn by Boy Scouts. RWS: Red & white strip, worn by all Scouts. TRS: Tan & red strip, worn by Boy Scouts. WBS: White & blue strip, worn by Sea Scouts. They identify the community, district, council, state, and country strips.
